So, you have found our page, but want to know more about Guinea Pig Showing! Do not worry, we are here to answer all your questions!
What is the difference between pet and pedigree showing?
At the club, we have two types of showable groups: Pedigrees and Pets, Pedigrees are Guinea Pigs which are from a specific breed which is outlined in the New Zealand Cavy Council Breed Standard. This breed standard has been outlined in order to achieve a quality Guinea Pig is produced, meaning we ensure New Zealand has quality Guinea Pigs, with minimal health issues and no genetic issues. In order to have a pedigree, you will need to contact a breeder and talk to us at the show.
A pet is any Guinea pig, you are not required to have breeding or their date of birth! As long as they are in healthy condition and clean, they are able to be shown! This is great for anyone to partake in as you can use your current guinea pigs, as well as it being a fun day which is a lot more relaxed than pedigree showing! It is also great to learn information about your guinea pigs from our judges. Pet showing is split into junior and senior, so adults, if you would like to show, do not worry! You can join in on the fun too!
What if I am in Pet showing, but want to show pedigrees?
If you are interested in showing pedigrees, feel free to contact the page or talk to any of the pedigree competitors, we will be able to help you find a nice pedigree guinea pig to start you off! As well as teach you the correct grooming technique! As well as offer other handy tips and tricks to ensure success in your pedigree career!

How do I prepare my pet for a show?
When preparing a pet for a show at Mana Cavy Club, we ask the guinea to be as clean as possible (this may be by bathing/washing, or just giving them a brush) The Guinea Pig's nails will need to trimmed, which our experienced members can do on the day if you are nervous or unable to. The scent gland (a small patch of oil/secretion at the rear of the pelvis, where their tail would be) should be cleaned (this can be done by using eucalyptus oil and a cotton bud or warm soapy water and a cotton bud). We are able to help with this on the day if you are stuck! Most of all, bring your best attitude! We do not tolerate bullying and we encourage making new friends and learning along the way.
